Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) is one of nature’s most distinct and refreshing herbs — known for its crisp, minty aroma and powerful soothing properties. This evergreen shrub grows low to the forest floor, carpeting woodlands with shiny green leaves and small red berries.
The leaves of Wintergreen release methyl salicylate, a natural compound similar to aspirin, responsible for its cooling, pain-relieving, and anti-inflammatory effects. Traditionally used by Native American tribes as a tea for fevers, aches, and colds, Wintergreen later became a cornerstone of natural liniments and balms for sore muscles and joints.
Spiritually, Wintergreen embodies resilience, strength, and purification — a refreshing reminder that healing can also be invigorating and empowering.
⚠️ Wintergreen should only be used internally under the supervision of a qualified herbalist or healthcare provider due to its potent active compounds.
How to Use (External):
While the leaves and berries were once used in small amounts to flavor teas or candies, modern herbalists advise caution due to the high concentration of methyl salicylate. Safer culinary enjoyment comes through teaberry-flavored syrups or natural gums, inspired by the traditional “mountain tea.”

Wintergreen has always been one of my favorite herbs for muscle and joint relief — it’s the “herbal ice pack” of nature. I use it in massage blends, healing salves, and aromatherapy sprays to clear heavy energy and soothe soreness after long days. It brings instant clarity and comfort wherever tension resides.
