My name is Zaakira Galloway, Registered Clinical Herbalist and founder of Island Roots Botanicals. I was raised in a family where herbs weren’t trends — they were tradition. My grandmother always told me that our roots stretched far beyond Trinidad—back to Yoruba healers in Nigeria whose understanding of plants and the body was generations deep.
That lineage flowed through my great-grandmother, who taught me to swallow capsules when I was six years old. It flowed through my grandmother, Diane Galloway, who spent over forty years tending to our community with the kind of herbal wisdom that can’t be taught in a classroom. And eventually, it flowed into me.
I didn’t realize it at the time, but the Blood Purifier in my baby bottle, the Goldenseal for every cold or flare-up, the herbs on every shelf—all of it was a continuation of something much older. A way of healing passed from Yoruba tradition to the Caribbean, and from the women in my family directly into my hands.
By sixteen, I was mixing my own blends beside my grandmother, learning that real wellness is not fast.
It is attentive.
It is preventative.
It is rooted.
In 2019, I took everything they taught me and opened Island Roots Botanicals in Miramar, Florida. I wanted to carry that lineage forward with intention—bringing ancestral herbal care into modern life in a way that feels familiar, trustworthy, and deeply human.
Today, as a Registered Clinical Herbalist working toward my Master Herbalist title, I’m continuing the work my ancestors began long before I was born. Every blend, every capsule, every tea is created with the same principles passed down to me:
Listen to the body.
Honor the Earth.
Strengthen the foundation before symptoms speak.
Care for the spirit as much as the physical.

Where We Come From
Our roots run deep — stretching from Yoruba herbal traditions in Nigeria to the Caribbean descendants who carried that knowledge into Trinidad, and eventually into my family’s hands.
Island Roots Botanicals was founded by Zaakira Galloway, a trained clinical herbalist and the fourth generation in a family line of herbal healers. From her great-grandmother’s backyard remedies to her grandmother’s decades of service in South Florida, herbal medicine has always been a way of life — never a trend.
Since 2019, Island Roots has grown from its beginnings in Miramar to a Longwood-based wellness shop serving clients worldwide.
For over 40 years, this knowledge has been trusted by thousands across our community. Today, that legacy continues — honoring tradition while evolving for the modern world.
